1850s-60s
Three of our dad's four great-grandfathers came to the US by clipper (sailing) ship. The 1850s was the Gold Rush era in California; the 1860s was the Transcontinental Railroad era (and the American Civil War)
Half of our mom's grandparents on her mother's side (our Oma) and half of her great- grandparents on her father's side (our Opa) were from Holland. The other half were from the Dusseldorf-Wuppertal area. The Dutch ancestors were drawn to that area to work in the coal mines and factories there.

The Bergs were Catholics, and our mom was baptized as a Catholic when she was born; but when our Oma divorced August Berg and married Larry Huetzen (in 1943) she changed our mom's religion to Protestant, which meant she would attend the Lutheran school, instead of the Catholic school. She says she attended both Catholic and Lutheran churches equally when growing up.

Our mom is evacuated to a farming community in Poland (between Katowice and Gliwice) for one year. She returns speaking fluent Polish, and not so fluent German. (Germany invaded Poland on Sept 1, 1939, which was the official start of WWII, but our mom did not mention that.)

Late 1943 - August Berg and Anna Maria Windhoff divorced; Anna married Hans (Larry) Huetzen. [Our mom always called him "Uncle Larry", but his gravestone shows "Hans Hützen". Our grandmother is burried in the same grave, but her name is not on the headstone.]

January-December - Our mom and her cousin Julian live in a Hitler Youth League dormitory in the Ore Mountains near Eibenstock on the Czech border; there was a lot of snow when she arrived, and it was like a military boarding school

March 25 - Our dad joins the US Army Air Forces (USAAF), he is stationed in San Antonio and Houston, TX, and Montgomery, AL. In San Antonio he works as a translator helping to train pilot from China.

November 13 - Our dad is honorably discharged from the US Army (Private First Class, Army Air Force) at Maxwell Field, Alabama. He returns to California from Alabama. As part of his early discharge agreement, he joined the USAAF Reserves for a 4-year commitment.

Our dad is called up from the reserves to serve in the USAF when the Korean War starts (June 25, 1950 to July 27, 1953) - he might have been called up in 1949

Our dad was getting ready to go to Korea with the USAF but just before he left it was announced that reservists who had less than 9 months left in their 4-year contract would not be sent to Korea. (Our mom wrote that he was concerned that American soldiers might mistake him for a Korean. But he never mentioned that.)
1952
November 13 - Our dad is honorably discharged from the US Air Force (Airman Third Class, Air Force Reserves). He returned to the National Dollar Store as the manager of their Stockton, California branch.
He also tried a short and unsuccessful stint as a professional gambler in Reno, Nevada (details are in the Our Dad section.)
Late 1952 or early 1953 - Our dad is accepted into a one-year sheet metal internship at McClellan Air Force Base, where his cousin (our Uncle Bill) was working. He moves to Sacramento.

Spring - After his sheet metal internship ends, our dad takes a cross-country trip to Washington, DC, New York City, and Toronto, Canada (and elsewhere), visiting friends and relatives and working in restaurants along the way.
Mid-April - Our mom vacations at the beach in the Netherlands with Rolf and Julianne, and possibly other friends, before departing for Canada
April 30 to May 13 - Our mom leaves for Montreal, Canada on the T.S.S. Canberra from Bremerhaven, Germany; it stopped in: Le Havre (Normandy), France; Southhampton, England; and in Ireland; she went through immigration in Quebec City on May 13th and fully disembarked in Montreal. She worked as a nanny in Montreal for a month; some Irish passengers helped her get settled in Toronto where our dad helped her find a job in the restaurant Jimmy Kee was a bartender at.
July 7 - Our dad and mom are married at the Toronto, Canada, City Hall - They lived in Fort Erie, Ontario for a month, then moved in with Jimmy & Joan Kee until our mom got her visa to come to the US on January 29, 1955. They both worked at the restaurant where Jimmy Kee was a bartender.

The trip took 2 weeks.
Our parents live in 1413 1/2 Q Street, which was a converted part of a garage behind the main house. Our dad had bought the entire property (duplex and garage) before going to Toronto and rented out the two duplex units (1411 & 1413).

Summer Vacation - Los Angeles, Disneyland, and Tijuana, Mexico. Jurgen Remembers our dad bought a 3-foot-tall white statue of a woman holding a round bowl in Tijuana. We parked on the US side of the border, and he had to carry the heavy statue back to car. He had it as a fountain in his garden for at least 4 decades after that.

November to May 2 - Our dad is on TDY (Temporary Duty) in Thailand to repair planes during the Vietnam War, returned via Hong Kong

April - Yosemite National Park, without my dad who was in Southeast Asia, our mom said it rained and snowed on us. Calvin Remembers: We had left our campground and the snow was so heavy that we could not get back to it. We returned home, leaving some things at the campground, including some yummy chicken.

August 26 - Monika's graduation from Portland Community College and Oregon Health Sciences University; Our parents attended her graduation. Monika Remembers: We went to a German restaurant with a few of my friends to celebrate. Mom loved it, she sang some of the German songs (the staff all sang). It was fun.
May 5 - Anne (Windhoff) Huetzen, our Oma, passed away
May to June - Our parents tour Europe: Berlin, Hungary, Monaco, Spain, Dusseldorf, and the University of Tubingen [where Alan, Mable and Lauren were based]

May to May - Alan, Mable, Skylan, & Chynna in Singapore; Alan was a visiting professor at the National University of Singapore; our mom and dad visited at Christmas - we took a 2-night cruise to Penang, Malaysia, and I took Dad only to Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia (on the island of Borneo); he wanted to see the headhunters there because the thought they might have originated in China, which they also think

October 26 - Our mother, Inge Ida Berg passes away
1999
March - Dad and Alan go to Houston to visit Bill Wing for the first time. He is a distant cousin of our grandmother (Unging)
2000
October - Alan, Jurgen and our dad met in Hong Kong. Alan had taken our dad to Hainan Island where Alan attended a conference and gave a keynote presentation. They returned to Hong Kong where they met Jurgen. Jurgen then took our dad to visit some factories that were making products for Klutz, a maker of educational toys. After the visits, one of the factories arranged for a car and driver to take dad and Jurgen to Kei Mei village.
